Act of Killing

This landmark documentary confronts the Indonesian killings of 1965 by inviting the perpetrators to reenact their crimes as scenes from the movies they love. The result is a surreal and disturbing study of memory, impunity and the stories killers tell themselves. As boastful reenactments give way to unease, it exposes the human cost of mass violence never brought to justice. It is a powerful and unsettling work of nonfiction cinema.
