Disney's FastPass: A Complicated History

Editor's Take

Defunctland builds a surprisingly substantial history from a small subject, the ride-reservation system Disney used to manage the misery of standing in line. It follows the mechanism through successive redesigns while drawing in the psychology of queuing and the commercial logic that shaped it. What could be trivia becomes an argument about how businesses engineer the experience of waiting. The pleasure is in watching a narrow topic open onto broader questions of design and behavior.

Defunctland turns the unlikely subject of Disney's FastPass into a feature-length history of how theme parks tried to solve the problem of waiting in line. It traces the system from its origins through its many redesigns, the psychology of queues, and the business logic that eventually killed it. What sounds trivial becomes a sharp study of crowd control, fairness, and how a company quietly shapes the behaviour of millions of visitors. It is meticulous, funny, and far more interesting than the premise suggests. Free to watch in HD on Dr Documentary.
