The Battle of Chile

Editor's Take

Filmed as the events themselves unfolded, this is a first-hand record of the months preceding the 1973 coup against Salvador Allende's elected government. The camera moves through factories, streets, and rallies, capturing a polarized society in real time rather than reconstructing it afterward. Its urgency comes precisely from that proximity, with no benefit of hindsight to smooth the account. It endures as a foundational work of committed political cinema, and is best read as the record of one engaged vantage point.

The Battle of Chile is a landmark documentary shot as events unfolded, capturing the final months before the 1973 coup that toppled Salvador Allende's elected government. The filmmakers moved through factories, streets, and rallies to record a society tearing itself apart, right up to the military takeover. Raw and urgent, it stands as one of the most important works of political filmmaking ever made, precisely because the cameras did not yet know how the story would end. This is history caught live rather than reconstructed. Free to watch in HD on Dr Documentary.
