The Look of Silence
Editor's Take
Joshua Oppenheimer's film approaches the 1965 Indonesian killings through a single survivor family, and specifically through a man who lost a brother to them. He seeks out the aging perpetrators and sits with them face to face, trying to understand how the violence was carried out and by whom. The confrontation is quiet and almost unbearable, a companion to the director's earlier work that trades spectacle for direct, unsettling encounter.
Joshua Oppenheimer's The Look of Silence confronts the 1965 Indonesian genocide through the eyes of one survivor family. A man whose brother was murdered quietly seeks out the aging perpetrators, sitting face to face with those responsible as he tries to understand how the killing happened and who did it. The film is a searing companion to Oppenheimer's earlier work on the same atrocities. Restrained and devastating, it is a profound study of memory and impunity. Free to watch in HD on Dr Documentary.
