Editor's Take

Opening the series, this first part traces how Cold War fear of communism drew the United States into Vietnam in the early 1960s. It sets out the origins of the conflict and its escalation, establishing the ground for what followed. The account is introductory by design, more scene-setting than analysis. It functions as the foundation for a longer, connected history.
