Conquering Canada: The (Staggering) Siege of Quebec and the Fall of New France
In 1759, the French Empire stood on the brink. Its American colony of New France was in peril. The British campaign of 1758 had shattered French control along the wilderness frontier. Thirteen Native nations-once firm French allies-had sworn not to fight for them under the Treaty of Easton. Most devastating of all, however, the fortress of Louisbourg had fallen after a grueling siege by General Jeffery Amherst, opening the St. Lawrence to a British invasion.
