Stealing a Nation

Editor's Take

John Pilger reconstructs the secret expulsion of the Chagos Islanders by British governments to clear the way for a United States base on Diego Garcia. The film documents the removal of an entire population and the decades of exile that followed, building a pointed indictment of the decision. Pilger's work is openly polemical, and this is argument as much as record, marshaled toward a case. Read with that in mind, it recovers an episode long kept out of public view.

Stealing a Nation is John Pilger's account of how the people of the Chagos Islands were secretly expelled from their homeland by British governments in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The film documents how an entire population was removed to make way for a United States military base on Diego Garcia, and the decades of exile that followed. It combines testimony from the islanders with the official records that reveal how the decision was made and hidden. It is a powerful indictment of a largely forgotten injustice.
