Hargrove - Roy Hargrove's Last Journey in Music

Editor's Take

An intimate portrait of the jazz trumpeter Roy Hargrove, the film accompanies him through the final years of a life divided between the stage and private difficulty. It alternates performance with unguarded talk about creativity, addiction, and the toll of a life given over to music. Because it was shot before his death at forty-nine, it carries the weight of a record made without knowing it was a farewell. The approach is observational and close, trusting the man and the playing to speak for themselves.

This intimate portrait follows jazz trumpeter Roy Hargrove through the final years of his life, capturing both his artistry and his struggles offstage. The film moves between electrifying performances and candid conversations about creativity, addiction, and the cost of devoting a life to music. Shot before his death at forty-nine, it preserves a rare, close view of a restless and gifted musician. It is essential viewing for jazz lovers and anyone drawn to the lives of great performers.
