The Story of Film: An Odyssey

Editor's Take

Mark Cousins's history of cinema is deliberately global, tracing the medium from silent experiments to the digital age while resisting a Hollywood-centered story. It follows how techniques and ideas migrated from film to film across continents, argued in Cousins's personal, essayistic voice. Long and opinionated, it doubles as a viewing list as much as a chronicle.

The Story of Film: An Odyssey is Mark Cousins's sweeping history of cinema, tracing the art form from its earliest silent experiments to the modern digital age. Travelling across continents, it champions innovators from every corner of the world, not just Hollywood, and shows how ideas and techniques spread from film to film. It is as much an argument as a history, made with real passion for the medium. Absorbing and eye-opening, it will reshape how you watch movies. Free to watch in HD on Dr Documentary.
