Finding Vivian Maier

Editor's Take

The story here is as much about posthumous discovery as about the photographs themselves, and the film keeps both in view. Assembled from interviews and the vast archive a collector stumbled onto at auction, it reconstructs a woman who guarded her images and her privacy with equal care. It is candid about the ethics of exhibiting an artist who never sought an audience, and it lets that discomfort remain part of the record.

Finding Vivian Maier follows the discovery of a mysterious nanny who secretly took more than a hundred thousand photographs that went unseen in her lifetime. After her work was bought by chance at an auction, she was recognised as one of the twentieth century's greatest street photographers. The film pieces together her hidden life while celebrating her remarkable images. It is an absorbing mystery about art, obscurity, and posthumous fame. Free to watch in HD on Dr Documentary.
