The Decline of Western Civilization Part III

Editor's Take

Closing Penelope Spheeris's trilogy, this entry turns from the music scene to the homeless gutter punks living on the margins of late-1990s Los Angeles. Built largely from unguarded interviews, it lets its subjects describe poverty and alienation in their own terms, with musicians such as Flea appearing at the edges. Spheeris resists any romance of the outsider, and the film is bleaker and more compassionate for that refusal.

The final film in Penelope Spheeris's landmark trilogy turns to the gutter punks of late-1990s Los Angeles, following homeless teenagers living on the margins. Through unflinching interviews, it captures a subculture defined by poverty, alienation, and defiant survival, with appearances from figures including Flea. Rather than glamorize its subjects, the film simply listens to them. Raw and compassionate, it is a powerful social document. Free to watch in HD on Dr Documentary.
