The Contradictions of Fair Hope

This award-winning documentary, narrated by Whoopi Goldberg, uncovers a little-known chapter of African American history. It tells how newly freed people across the South formed benevolent societies to face hunger, illness, and fear after slavery. The film restores the memory of communities that organised to care for their own. It is a moving watch for anyone interested in Black American history, community, and resilience after emancipation.
