Meet the Real Cold War Spies of BRIXMIS

Editor's Take

A rare look at BRIXMIS, the licensed British unit that legally spied on Soviet forces in occupied Germany, told partly by the men who did it. It is a wonderfully specific slice of Cold War history most general accounts never mention.

This documentary uncovers the secret work of BRIXMIS, a British military mission that spied on Soviet forces in occupied East Germany during the Cold War. Operating in the tense divided landscape of postwar Europe, its personnel gathered intelligence while playing a dangerous cat-and-mouse game with the Red Army. Veterans recall the risks, the close calls, and the strange rules of this shadow conflict. Absorbing and little-known, it opens a window on real Cold War espionage.
