The Samurai: Ancient Warriors

Editor's Take

Returning to twelfth-century Japan, this film follows the near-annihilating war between the Taira and Minamoto clans. It centers on the young Minamoto survivors Yoritomo and Yoshitsune, whose rivalry and fate would define the coming age of the samurai. The storytelling favors character, loyalty, and betrayal over dry chronology. It brings a formative and often unfamiliar conflict into sharp, dramatic focus.
