Syria: The Rise and Fall of Assad
Editor's Take
Filmed on both sides of the regime's sudden collapse in December 2024, this DW documentary asks how a decades-long dictatorship in Syria unravelled so fast. It sets the family dynasty and the brutal civil war against the testimony of ordinary Syrians living through the turn. Reporting close to events, it favours explanation over triumphalism on a still-raw subject.
Filmed both before and after the dramatic collapse of the regime in December 2024, this documentary examines how Bashar al-Assad's long dictatorship in Syria unraveled so suddenly. It looks back at the family dynasty, the brutal civil war, and the forces that finally drove Assad to flee, while also listening to ordinary Syrians and their hopes for what comes next. The film balances political history with human testimony. For anyone following the Middle East, it is a timely and clear-eyed account of a pivotal moment. Free to watch in HD on Dr Documentary.
