The Dark Age Origins of the First Viking Raiders
Editor's Take
Rather than the plunder-and-burn caricature, this account treats the early Norse as traders, settlers, and craftsmen whose reach reshaped medieval Europe. It leans on archaeology as much as chronicle, using material evidence to test the reputation the raiders left behind. The approach is corrective without being apologetic, restoring complexity to figures too often flattened into legend.
This film explores the Dark Age origins of the first Viking raiders, the Scandinavian warriors who terrorised and traded across early medieval Europe. It reveals them as more than pirates: skilled craftsmen who opened trade routes, founded cities, and captured ancient hubs. Drawing on history and archaeology, it separates the fearsome reputation from the fuller reality. It is an engaging look at how the Viking age began. Free to watch in HD on Dr Documentary.
