How Alfred The Great Transformed England From Viking Ruin Alfred The Great: The King Who Stopped The Vikings Alfred the Great was born to King Æthelwulf of Wessex in the mid-9th century, inheriting a kingdom facing an existential threat from Viking invasions. After a surprise attack forced him into hiding, Alfred regrouped his forces and achieved a decisive victory at the Battle of Edington in 878. This led to a peace treaty that confined the Vikings to the Danelaw, securing Wessex's survival.
