Coffee, cocoa, tea and rice — climate change is quietly reshaping the flavour, supply and livelihoods tied to these crops across Indonesia, one of the world’s most important food producers. Rising temperatures, erratic rainfall and pests are stressing crops — shrinking yields, altering taste and pushing prices higher. Coffee now tastes more bitter. Cocoa beans are losing their fat content. Tea no longer smells as sweet, and rice yields are less nutritious.
