The Day Hitler’s Soldiers Realized the War Was Lost
In the final months of 1944, soldiers realized the war was no longer about fronts—it was about survival. German lines were collapsing: exhausted units, without fuel or reinforcements, retreated before an enemy that gave no respite. Orders for absolute resistance ceased to make sense. From within, the machinery that upheld the Reich began to falter. In the east, entire divisions disintegrated in days; in the west, long columns of German prisoners moved past.
