WWII in Colour: Overlord – D-Day

Editor's Take

This installment of World War II in Colour concentrates on Operation Overlord and the June 1944 landings in Normandy. Using colorized archive footage, it follows the secrecy and logistics behind the invasion and the assault on the beaches themselves. The restored color is the hook, lending immediacy to material usually seen in worn black and white. As broadcast history it favors clear narrative and visual impact over deep analysis, which suits its purpose.

This episode of World War II in Colour focuses on Operation Overlord and the D-Day landings that opened the Western front against Nazi Germany. Using colourised archive footage, it follows the immense planning and secrecy behind the invasion and the assault on the beaches of Normandy in June 1944. The restored colour brings a striking immediacy to one of history's most decisive military operations. It is a vivid retelling of the day the Allies returned to mainland Europe.
