20 Days in Mariupol

Editor's Take

Compiled by the last international reporting team inside the besieged city, this is a firsthand chronicle of the opening weeks of the 2022 siege of Mariupol. The footage documents the shelling of homes and hospitals from within the events, without the distance that later accounts allow. Its power is inseparable from its cost, the camera present at scenes most reporting could only describe. Viewers should be prepared for material that is difficult by any measure, and valued as primary witness.

20 Days in Mariupol is journalist Mstyslav Chernov's Oscar-winning record of the opening weeks of the Russian siege of the Ukrainian city in 2022. As the only international reporting team left inside, his crew filmed the shelling of homes, hospitals, and civilians while the world outside struggled to grasp the scale of it. The footage is harrowing and intimate, capturing both the horror and the courage of people trapped under fire. It stands as one of the most important frontline documentaries of the war in Ukraine.
