Honeyland

Editor's Take

The governing image of Honeyland is a rule of restraint, the wild beekeeper's principle of taking half and leaving half for the bees. When new neighbours disregard that balance, the film quietly becomes a parable about people and the limits of what nature can absorb. Shot over years with remarkable closeness, it observes without narration and trusts the images to carry the meaning.

Honeyland follows one of the last wild beekeepers in the mountains of North Macedonia, a woman who harvests honey by an ancient rule: take half, and leave half for the bees. When a restless family moves in nearby and ignores that balance, the fragile harmony between people and nature begins to break. Shot over years with astonishing intimacy, the film became a landmark of modern documentary. Quiet, beautiful, and unforgettable, it speaks far beyond its remote setting.
