The Sava Floodplains - Croatia's secret paradise
Rate itMember ratings
Each year, snowmelt from the Alps causes the River Sava in Croatia to rise about ten meters, flooding areas the size of Lake Constance. Yet Zagreb and Belgrade avoid disaster because the Sava flows freely. These annual floods create a unique Central European paradise: species-rich alluvial forests and fertile floodplains. The area hosts over 240 bird species, including hoopoes, grebes, egrets, snipes, and avocets.
