This is Percy Schmeiser, the Canadian farmer who got sued by Monsanto after its patented canola turned up in his fields, and who fought the agrochemical giant all the way to the Supreme Court. I love a David-and-Goliath story where David is a seventy-year-old with a tractor. The idea that a corporation can own a life form and sue you for its drift is genuinely dystopian. A lecture-format film, but the fight at its center is the real thing.

Percy Schmeiser presented "The Farmer Who Took on Monsanto" at Western Washington University's Huxley College of the Environment's Speaker Series, on Friday, Oct. 21, 2011 in Fraser Hall 4 on Western Washington University's campus. The lecture was co-sponsored by the WWU Center for Canadian-American Studies, Western's Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies' World Issues Forum, and the Community Food Co-op.
