Operation Gladio is the rare conspiracy that turned out to be filed paperwork, NATO stay-behind armies, buried weapons caches, and civilian operatives waiting for an invasion that never came. This lays out how a defensive plan drifted into one of the murkier chapters of the Cold War. I love a story where the tinfoil-hat version and the declassified version finally shake hands. It is a useful reminder that a secret army inside your own country is sometimes just a fact.

What began as a secret plan to resist a Soviet invasion eventually became one of the most controversial intelligence operations of the Cold War. Known as Operation Gladio, the network consisted of hidden stay-behind armies established across Western Europe, stocked with buried weapons, covert communications, and civilian operatives prepared to wage guerrilla war if the Red Army ever occupied the continent.
