Inside China's Elite: Rise and Fall of Billionaires

Dr.Docs' Take

This tracks the rise and sudden falls of China's billionaires, the tycoons who got fabulously rich as the country transformed and then discovered that in Beijing, wealth does not buy independence from the state. I find the reversals fascinating, capitalism on a leash held by the Party. One year a hero of the new economy, the next year vanished for reeducation. A sharp look at power that lets you get rich, right up until you get too visible.

This documentary goes inside China's elite, telling the story of the country's billionaires and their sudden rises and falls. Once a dangerous word, capitalism transformed China into a global powerhouse, minting extraordinary fortunes along the way. It examines the pressures these tycoons face as politics and business collide. It is a revealing watch about wealth, power and the fragile status of China's super-rich.
