The Chernobyl Incident: The Disaster That Contaminated a Continent

Dr.Docs' Take

This reconstructs the night of 26 April 1986, when Chernobyl's Reactor 4 blew with a force the film puts at two hundred Hiroshima bombs, and the Soviet state's first instinct was not to save anyone but to make sure the world never found out. I keep coming back to that reflex. The disaster was physics, the cover-up was policy, and the second one arguably killed more people than the first. Grim, essential, and a masterclass in how a system protects itself before its citizens.

On the night of 26 April 1986, reactor number four at Chernobyl exploded, spreading radioactive fallout across a continent. This documentary reconstructs the disaster and the Soviet instinct to conceal it rather than protect the public. It examines the failures, cover-ups and human costs of the worst nuclear accident in history. Sobering and detailed, it shows how secrecy magnified a catastrophe that still shapes debates about nuclear power today. Free to watch in HD on Dr Documentary.
