US Embassy Attacks: The CIA Hunt for Al Qaeda in Africa

Dr.Docs' Take

This follows the CIA's hunt after the 1998 US embassy bombings in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, al-Qaeda's first major strike, as the trail runs into Somalia and a world of bribed warlords and shifting loyalties. I find the pre-9/11 chapter of this story the most revealing, because the warnings were already flashing. It is intelligence work at its murkiest, told partly by the people who did it. The bombing that should have woken everyone up, three years early.

This declassified account follows the CIA hunt for al Qaeda in Africa after the 1998 bombing of the US embassy in Nairobi, the group's first major attack. It traces the trail of destruction from Kenya to Somalia and Mogadishu as agents pursue those responsible. Through the operation it reveals the early, deadly shape of a threat still to come. It is a tense watch on espionage, terror and the shadow war that followed. Free to watch in HD on Dr Documentary.
