This is the declassified story of the 2001 Qala-i-Jangi prison uprising in Afghanistan, where a handful of CIA operatives, outnumbered a hundred to one, fought to put down a Taliban revolt, and where Mike Spann became the first American killed in the war. I take the heroic framing with salt and still find the raw account gripping. It is one of those real operations more chaotic than any thriller. History written in a fortress, at very close range.
