Kelly and Her Sisters - BAFTA Winner Poverty Documentary

Editor's Take

A BAFTA-winning portrait shot on a condemned Birmingham housing estate, this film observes one family trying to hold together after a stepfather's departure. It stays with the daily texture of life on public assistance in a decaying home, the mould spreading across the windows, and it watches with compassion rather than judgment. The observational method gives the family room to be more than their circumstances, which is the source of the film's quiet force.
