Europe's drug mafia (1/2) - How drugs made the Netherlands rich

The first part of this DW investigation traces how the Netherlands became Europe's hub for the narcotics trade. It reaches back to the 17th century, showing how Dutch colonialism and the opium trade from Indonesia laid the financial groundwork for a business that still shapes the country today. Rigorous and historically grounded, it connects centuries-old commerce to the modern drug economy and the wealth it generated. It is a sharp piece of reporting on crime, money, and empire.
