The Secret Culture of the Apes

Editor's Take

Examining how great apes transmit learned behavior, this film builds on the line of inquiry that Jane Goodall's work opened decades ago. It considers tool use, teaching, social bonds, and emotion as evidence of something like culture, weighing how much separates these primates from us. Filmed among wild families, it favors patient observation, and treats the question of animal minds as genuinely unsettled.

The Secret Culture of the Apes explores how chimpanzees, bonobos, and other great apes pass on learned behaviour, echoing the discoveries that made Jane Goodall famous. It examines tool use, social bonds, teaching, and emotion, weighing just how much these primates share with us. Filmed in the wild, the documentary tracks families across generations to reveal traditions that look strikingly human. It is a thoughtful entry point for anyone curious about animal intelligence and our own evolutionary roots. Free to watch in HD on Dr Documentary.
