David Attenborough's Ant Mountain

Editor's Take

Trained on two rival wood-ant colonies in the Swiss Jura, this is macro natural history that treats an insect society as a subject worthy of epic framing. Months of close-up filming reveal the engineering, conflict, and cooperation packed into these teeming nests across a single year. Attenborough's narration lends familiar authority, but the astonishment belongs to the footage itself, which finds drama at a scale usually overlooked.

David Attenborough's Ant Mountain sets its epic drama in the wooded mountains of the Swiss Jura, where two rival wood ant colonies wage a year-long struggle for survival. Through months of close-up filming, the documentary reveals the astonishing engineering, warfare, and cooperation that unfold inside these teeming insect cities. Narrated with Attenborough's trademark clarity, it turns creatures we usually ignore into a gripping natural saga. It is a reminder that the biggest stories in nature sometimes play out at our feet.
