Cold War: MAD World – Superpowers

Editor's Take

Opening the Cold War at the moment two superpowers emerged from the Second World War with irreconcilable ideologies, this installment begins with the atomic bombings of Japan. It traces the hardening antagonism between Washington and Moscow and the peculiar logic of mutually assured destruction. As a first chapter it is more scene-setting than conclusive, establishing the terms of a standoff rather than resolving them.
