I have stayed in some rough hotels, but the Cecil in downtown Los Angeles has an actual body count, and I need you to sit with that for a second. This is the building that housed serial killers Richard Ramirez and Jack Unterweger, saw a run of guest deaths and window jumps going back decades, and handed the world the Elisa Lam elevator footage in 2013 that none of us have fully recovered from. I am not saying the address is cursed. I am saying that if this hotel were a person, it would have been read its rights by now, and I would be checking my own door lock about six times tonight.

February 11th, 1962, Julia Frances Moore jumps to her death from an eighth-floor window. Eight months later, 27-year-old Pauline Otton jumps from one on the ninth. It’s a trial of murder and suicide which has continued right up to the recent past, including the hotel being the temporary home of the notorious Nightstalker serial killer, Richard Ramirez. Many hotels have achieved fame for the people who stayed there, even for the people who died there.
