The Two Escobars

Editor's Take

Two men, unrelated but bound by a country and a name, anchor this account of how cartel money remade Colombian football in the 1980s and 1990s. It follows a national team's rise alongside the violence financed beneath it, building toward the killing that fused the two stories. The structure is tragic and tightly drawn, using sport to tell a larger tale of a nation.

The Two Escobars weaves together the lives of two unrelated Colombians who shaped a nation: drug lord Pablo Escobar and national team defender Andres Escobar. It traces how cartel money flooded into Colombian football during the 1980s and 1990s, lifting the sport onto the world stage while entangling it with violence. The film builds toward the 1994 World Cup and the shocking murder that followed. Directed by the Zimbalist brothers, it is a gripping study of how crime, sport, and nationalism collided.
