Operation Paperclip's Darkest Secret: The Nazi Rocket Scientist

Dr.Docs' Take

Operation Paperclip's darkest corner, the German rocket brothers whose expertise the US and USSR fought over, one of whom died in American custody with his fate tied to a secret submarine-launched missile test. I keep this filed under the uncomfortable arithmetic of the arms race. The knowledge was too valuable to let morality get in the way. A grimmer, more personal angle on the scientists we adopted and the questions we chose not to ask.

The dramatic true story of two German brothers whose skills in WW2 shaped the post-war world. Friedrich Steinhoff, a U-boat commander, was interrogated and died in US custody, his fate sealed by a secret submarine-launched rocket test. His brother, Ernst, a V2 rocket engineer working with Wernher von Brown, was brought to the US under Operation Paperclip to pioneer the American space program.
