The Philanthropists: How Billionaires Are Infiltrating Our Democracies

Dr.Docs' Take

The Philanthropists asks the uncomfortable question hiding inside all that billionaire generosity: why do the mega-rich give money away, and what quiet influence do they buy with it? I love a film brave enough to be skeptical of a good deed. Following three billionaires, it shows how charity can become soft power aimed straight at democracy. Generosity with strings is still strings, and this one gently pulls on them.

This film examines how billionaire philanthropists use their giving to gain influence over democracies. Filmed over two years, it follows wealthy donors from China, the United States and Russia to ask why the mega-rich give money away and what they expect in return. It probes the blurred line between charity and power. It is a provocative watch on wealth, politics and the hidden strings behind big philanthropy. Free to watch in HD on Dr Documentary.
