USS Cole Attack: How the CIA Tried to Destroy Al Qaeda

Dr.Docs' Take

This follows the CIA's pursuit after the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen, an al-Qaeda strike whose leadership stayed frustratingly out of reach until after 9/11 escalated everything. I find the pre-9/11 near-misses the most haunting part of this whole era. The warnings were there, the trail was warm, and the world was not paying attention yet. Intelligence work at its most maddening, told with the grim clarity of hindsight.

This documentary investigates the aftermath of the USS Cole bombing and the CIA's campaign against al-Qaeda. It follows how the attackers were traced while the network's leadership remained elusive, and how the terror threat escalated toward and beyond 9/11. Drawing on declassified detail, it reconstructs a tense chapter in the fight against terrorism. It is a gripping watch for anyone interested in intelligence and the war on al-Qaeda.
