Beirut Bomb: How the CIA Tried to Wipe Out Hezbollah

Dr.Docs' Take

This is the declassified story of the 1985 Beirut car bombing that CIA Director William Casey allegedly greenlit to kill a Hezbollah-linked cleric, an attack that missed its target and killed dozens of civilians instead. I take the ENDEVR framing with salt, but the core is genuine Cold War dirty-war history. It is the kind of operation that stays off the books precisely because it went horribly wrong. Watch it as a reminder that off-the-books rarely means clean.

This documentary reconstructs the 1985 Beirut car bombing said to have been an off-the-books CIA attempt to kill Sheikh Mohammed Fadlallah and cripple Hezbollah. It follows the alleged decision by CIA director William Casey and the deadly blast that missed its target and killed many bystanders. Drawing on declassified material, it examines covert operations and their unintended consequences. It is a tense look at espionage, assassination and the shadow war in Lebanon.
