Left Behind: The Untold Story of the Women of Senegal

Editor's Take

Turning its attention to the women of Senegal, this Al Jazeera film considers the migration crisis from the shore rather than the sea. It listens to the mothers and wives who keep families and villages intact while husbands and sons risk a long and often fatal boat journey. The perspective is its distinguishing choice, recovering a side of migration that headline coverage rarely reaches.

Left Behind tells the story of the women of Senegal whose husbands and sons risk the perilous 1,500-kilometre boat journey from West Africa to the Canary Islands. Many never return, leaving mothers and wives to hold families and villages together in their absence. This Al Jazeera film listens to the women left behind, revealing the human cost of migration that headlines usually miss. It is an intimate portrait of endurance, grief, and quiet strength on the other side of the crossing. Free to watch in HD on Dr Documentary.
