David Attenborough Presents: Hummingbirds - Jewelled Messengers

Editor's Take

Attenborough turns his attention to hummingbirds, birds that live at the outer edge of what biology permits. The film builds around their extreme physiology, the racing metabolism and precise flight that set them apart. Close, patient camerawork does the explaining, revealing feats too fast for the eye. It is an intimate study rather than a survey, and gains from that narrow focus.

In Hummingbirds: Jewelled Messengers, David Attenborough tells the story of how these tiny birds became the ultimate masters of the air. The film reveals how hummingbirds live at the very limits of what is biologically possible, with the highest metabolism and most extraordinary flight of any bird. Shot in 4K, it captures their shimmering colours and impossible aerial feats in exquisite detail. It is a jewel-like portrait of nature's smallest aviators. Free to stream in 4K on Dr Documentary.
