Wild Madagascar: Fantastic Creatures

Editor's Take

Isolation is the organizing idea here, the tens of millions of years that left Madagascar populated by lemurs, chameleons, and creatures found nowhere else. The film travels the island's contrasting habitats to show evolution working in a sealed laboratory. It is a straightforward natural-history tour, carried by the strangeness of its subjects rather than by any argument.

Wild Madagascar explores the extraordinary creatures of the world's fourth-largest island, isolated off Africa's southeast coast for tens of millions of years. That long separation produced lemurs, chameleons, and countless other species found nowhere else on Earth. The film travels across the island's varied habitats to show how this evolutionary laboratory works. Colourful and full of surprises, it is a fine introduction to one of the planet's great wildlife hotspots. Free to watch in HD on Dr Documentary.
