The Gdr Defector and the Bulgarian Border Guard
This documentary reunites a former East German defector with the border guard who caught him decades earlier. In 1988 Jurgen Cyrulik tried to flee the GDR through Bulgaria and was captured, and thirty years later the two men meet again. The film explores memory, division and reconciliation across the old Iron Curtain. Intimate and moving, it turns Cold War history into a deeply personal encounter.
