While western troops were forced out, in some cases to the cheers of local population, Russia stepped in to fill the vacuum with weapons, advisors, and propaganda. From a population standpoint, the Sahel is one of the world's youngest regions. It's also one of the world's poorest regions. People here face a lack of opportunity, the tangible effects of climate change, and terrorism.
