Hoop Dreams

Editor's Take

Following two young Chicagoans, Arthur Agee and William Gates, across five years of chasing basketball stardom, this film uses sport as a lens on family, race, and class. Its patient, long-term method lets ordinary setbacks and hopes accumulate into something larger than an athletic story. Widely regarded as a landmark of American documentary, it earns that standing through observation rather than commentary.

Hoop Dreams follows two young Chicagoans, Arthur Agee and William Gates, as they chase basketball stardom out of the inner city over the course of five years. Roger Ebert famously called it the great American documentary, and its patient storytelling turns sport into a study of family, race, class, and hope. This piece revisits the film decades on, reflecting on its Chicago roots and lasting power. It remains one of the most moving portraits of ambition and opportunity ever filmed.
