Shouting at Stars: A History of Interstellar Messages

Editor's Take

Charting a century of attempts to signal our presence to the cosmos, the film follows radio broadcasts, targeted transmissions, and the plaques and records sent aboard Pioneer and Voyager. LEMMiNO lays out both the engineering and the argument, including the long-running debate over whether announcing ourselves is wise at all. It treats the subject with curiosity rather than certainty, giving room to the skeptics of contact. The effect is a thoughtful survey of a strange and genuinely open question.

Shouting at Stars traces humanity's century-long effort to announce itself to the universe, from early radio broadcasts to messages deliberately aimed at the stars. LEMMiNO covers the famous transmissions and physical probes, including the plaques and records carried aboard the Pioneer and Voyager craft, and the debates over whether contact is wise at all. The film blends the history of these attempts with the science and philosophy behind them. It is a thoughtful look at how we might one day say hello to another civilisation.
