General Magic

Editor's Take

Recounting a secretive 1989 startup that tried to build the smartphone nearly two decades early, this film assembles rare archival material into a study of premature ambition. Its subjects, many of them veterans of the original Macintosh, sketched out ideas that later defined the iPhone and much else, even as their own company failed. The story becomes a meditation on how invention and timing diverge, and on what a spectacular failure can seed.

General Magic tells the story of a secretive 1989 Silicon Valley startup that tried to build the smartphone almost two decades too early. The company gathered veterans of the original Macintosh team and dreamed up ideas that later shaped the iPhone, social media, e-commerce, and even emoji, yet it collapsed spectacularly. Using rare archival footage, the film shows how a brilliant vision and an epic failure quietly seeded the technology that now runs our lives. It is essential viewing on innovation, timing, and the fine line between genius and disaster. Free to watch in HD on Dr Documentary.
