Editor's Take

Centered on Gobekli Tepe in southern Turkey, this NOVA investigation turns on a single unsettling fact: monumental building appears to predate farming and settled towns. It follows archaeologists reading the site's carved pillars for clues about why people first raised such structures. The method is patient and evidentiary, letting new findings complicate the textbook sequence of human development. It is most rewarding for viewers curious about how consensus in archaeology gets revised.
